Beschreibung:

Virtually everyone-left, right, and center-believes both that the U.S. economy is capitalist and that the economy is autonomous, coherent, and regulated by its own internal laws. But this view is an illusion. Economies organized around the pursuit of private profit are contradictory, incoherent, and heavily shaped by politics and governmental action. In Capitalism, leading economic sociologist Fred L. Block explains how, during a cycle of leadership that has alternated between center-left Democrats and increasingly extreme Republicans, much-needed policy changes have not been made. The capitalist illusion is hugely consequential because it has been embraced by political and economic elites who are convinced that they are powerless to change this system. The reality, Block argues, is that restoring the vitality of the United States and the world economy requires a new period of major reforms on the scale of the New Deal and the post-World War II building of new global institutions.
