The 18th issue of the Employment in Europe report is divided into 5 chapters, each shedding light on current trends or on a particular topical issue of relevance for European labour markets. Areas of focus include evaluation of active labour market policies; the link between human capital, technical change and economic growth; flexicurity and geographic mobility in the EU. Compared to 2004, economic growth in the EU decelerated in 2005, mainly due to the impact of the sharp rise in oil prices. GDP growth averaged 1.6% for the year as a whole, down from 2.4% in 2004. However, this appears to be only a temporary deceleration.
